Addiction Severity Index
(ASI)
The Easy-ASI automates the Addiction Severity Index and was developed with Dr. A. Thomas McLellan, the creator of the ASI. The ASI has been proven to be reliable and valid in almost 20 years of use, has been translated into 5 languages (Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Yiddish) and is used around the world. It is by far the most widely used addiction assessment instrument in the United States.
The Easy-ASI includes all of the items in the Addiction Severity Index plus it:
- Captures an unlimited number of addresses to help improve follow-up,
- Automatically calculates the composite scores,
- Includes "On-Screen Tutorials" to explain the coding rules and codes for each field,
- Allows you to enter individual comments along with each answer, and,
- Generates a natural-sounding narrative report.
- Extremely easy to use and includes:
- context-sensitive on-line help including the complete ASI administration manual,
- a step-by-step users manual,
- free support for the first 30 days (more than enough to help you get up and running).
The individual comments allow you to transform the ASI into an extremely useful clinical tool. For instance, immediately after answering that a client is on medication, you can document the medications used. These comments will appear immediately after the applicable sentence on the narrative report, just like they would if you wrote the narrative report from scratch.
The Easy-ASI comes with basic ASI reports:
- Text Narrative summary
- Cross-Checking Report which identifies inconsistencies between answers,
- Answers Report, a quick 1-2 page list of answers and comments,
- Unanswered Questions report, which reports any incomplete questions
QuickStart has created a widely used paper version of the Easy-ASI called the "Clinical/Training ASI" and put it in the public domain. This contains the same questions as the original Addiction Severity Index, and adds the coding rules for each question and extensive space for comments. It can be downloaded and used free of charge.
